If you try one thing from Ms. DeeDee's table, make it this. The Sweet Potato Pecan Pie is her signature creation, a Southern showstopper inspired by her mother's favorite holiday pies and the generations of New Orleans cooks in her family.

It starts with real sweet potatoes, whipped into a velvety, spiced custard with cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of vanilla. That creamy layer is crowned with toasted pecans baked into a glossy, caramelized topping that crackles under your fork, and it all sits in a golden, flaky homemade crust. As the oldest of thirty-three grandchildren, Ms. DeeDee grew up watching her grandmother, Madear, turn a kitchen just outside New Orleans into the heart of the whole community, where food was love you could see and taste.
